This is an old picture of Lanark about 1870. It shows a crow stepped gabled house next to the Clydesdale Inn.
This sort of house shows how the Union of the Crowns led to increased prosperity for Scotland. Lanark was something of a boom town as a result of the end of the wars between Catholics and Protestants as well as the tremendous upsurge of trade between England and Scotland. This is also reflected in the number of low denomination copper coins that are found by metal detecting in Clydesdale`s fields.
