This is a view of some of the school children from Crossford School. A few of the children might stay on till they were 14 . For a select few there was the possibility of going on to a Grammar School . However for pupils like my father in law it was important to get a job at 14 and he ended up in a pit at Sandal near Wakefield in 1918. For the majority of children shown here , the girls would go into service and the boys might go into the army, work on the land. Job opportunities for girls were rather limited.
